Philosophy at hand
Kamila Morawska
Dear adult, if you have picked up this guide, it means you are eager for a philosophical adventure. Yes, you read that right, You! Not just your ward. I can assure you, however, that this will be a different kind of adventure than kayaking on a river, ballooning in the air, or cycling in a forest.
I have been experiencing it since 2014, since the first workshops on philosophy/philosophizing with and for children titled "Images of Philosophy," which I lead at the Tajne Komplety bookstore in Wrocław. All the topics contained in this book have been developed by me. All stories told, and exercises practiced. They work, they shake things up, they guarantee great fun. I have neither oars nor a compass, but I have something else.
Within these pages, you will be the young person's guide. Now you need that something.
This guide is here to help you. From here, you can draw on theory to support yourself in moments of doubt, and method to delve into philosophical topics by asking questions. When the young person is solving the riddles I've posed, prompt them with questions, disrupt their train of thought and imagery. Infinite questions are, after all, more important than providing a final answer. And the most interesting moments will be when you start asking questions yourself, for that is when your philosophical Self will awaken.
I encourage you to philosophize,
Kama Morawska
The author of the book is Dr. Kamila Morawska, who has been conducting philosophy classes for children and youth, "Images of Philosophy," for nearly 10 years. The book consists of two parts: an illustrated textbook with substantive content and exercises for children, and a pedagogical guide for adults containing a series of tips for working with a child. The illustrations for the book were prepared by students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław under the supervision of Dr. Karolina Wiśniewska from the ASP book studio. The book contains 5 topics:
1) Awaken the Philosophical Self (Subject)
2) Plato's Idea of the World (Idea)
3) Discover the Lebenswelt with Husserl (Essence)
4) Elementary Elements (Element)
5) On Time for Time (Time).
