Art Cafe Kalambur 40 Years

An album published to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Wrocław's Art Cafe Kalambur, founded in 1982 by Bogusław Litwiniec.

The history of the venue, covered in the publication, spans the years 1982-2022 and includes interviews with the cafe's founders, designers, animators, actors, managers, regulars, photographers, and bartenders.

"The Cafe under Kalambur (now Art Cafe Kalambur) is a place conceived by Bogusław Litwiniec, and run and developed by Halina Litwiniec from 1982 to 2002. It was, and still is, a unique cultural institution. It remains so because in 2002, Michał Litwiniec took over the helm of the Kalambur ship, also creating a younger sister to the Cafe under Kalambur, namely Kalaczakra Gallery & Coffee.
In the album, you will read about an incredible, colorful history. About difficult beginnings in the 1980s, innovative ideas and theatrical productions (the Cafe under Kalambur also had a stage, and what productions they were!), concerts, vernissages, activities, meetings, conversations, international festivals of theatrical avant-garde, which brought the light of art into the grey reality of the Polish People's Republic and opened a cultural window to the world in Wrocław. And above all, about the people who created and continue to create this magical place, because without their imagination and energy, extraordinary diligence, patience, and persistence, the impossible became and remains possible.
There is also extensive photographic documentation, not only from the archives of Teatr Kalambur, now the Association of European Ties, but also from private albums and drawers – these are priceless. There are personal memoirs from guests, creators, and staff.
The Cafe under Kalambur is forty years old. Thousands of people have passed through its interiors, and each of them has carried the atmosphere of this place further into the world. Once you've visited, entered, stayed here, you cannot forget it.
