“I will give these poems into good hands,” the poet announces, and Jakub Skurtys accepts. Not, however, to keep them for himself and take possession of them, but to listen to them, nourish them, and care for them, and then – a little different, slightly altered – to release them into the world,” writes Piotr Bogalecki in his editorial review, announcing the new book by the Wrocław critic. “The Benefactor…” is simultaneously a treatise on the poems of Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki and a philosophical essay on the gift of modern poetry, and partly also a liberatic experiment that stems from post-secular thought, donational reflection, and a desire to reread the work of the author of “Dzieje rodzin polskich” (Histories of Polish Families) once again – as a common linguistic good. The critic was thus accompanied from the outset by the following questions: is lyric poetry a gift?; does poetry divide us, or do we divide it among ourselves?; is a proper name (idiom) truly proper, or rather given, and thus common?; and finally: what does it mean to give and receive a poem? Skurtys’s third book is an attempt at benevolent hermeneutics, collecting and describing subsequent encounters with the poetry of “Dyć,” but it would also not exist without the participation of the author of these lyrics – without his generous gestures and watchful eye, and without the works gifted to us, which ultimately formed a wafer-sharing anthology of twelve “communion poems.”
