Warsaw 1920s

In the sixth album of the FOTO RETRO series, we turn back time by almost a century to show our capital city in the years 1920–1930. Grand city life returns to the city, neglected and impoverished during the German occupation of 1915–1918. New buildings are erected, and the most important public edifices of independent Poland are renovated. Public transport develops, new cinemas, fashionable cabarets, and luxurious restaurants open. Warsaw once again becomes a European metropolis. The capital also witnesses serious political crises – the assassination of President Narutowicz, the May Coup of 1926. By the late 1920s, the city is already feeling the onset of the global economic crisis. The photos come from the National Digital Archive, and the introduction to the album was written by Jerzy S. Majewski, a renowned Warsaw expert and journalist for "Gazeta Stołeczna".
